Lake Sakakawea State Park

Lake Sakakawea State Park, near Riverdale, North Dakota, sits on Lake Sakakawea, one of the largest reservoirs by surface area in the country, formed when the Garrison Dam was completed on the Missouri River in 1953. The lake is named for Sacagawea, the Shoshone woman who guided the Lewis and Clark Expedition, using a spelling and pronunciation preferred in North Dakota. The dam's construction flooded a large portion of the Fort Berthold Reservation, displacing much of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation from their most fertile farmland, a history the surrounding region continues to reckon with. The park today offers boating, fishing, and camping along the reservoir's shore.
