King William Historic District

The King William Historic District is a neighborhood of 19th-century mansions along the San Antonio River just south of downtown, in the Southtown area. The land was once farmland of Mission San Antonio de Valero, and it was divided into residential lots between 1853 and 1866 as German immigrants poured into San Antonio. Surveyor Ernst Hermann Altgelt built the first house after arriving in 1866 and named the area for King Wilhelm I of Prussia, and the district's grand houses include several by architect Alfred Giles, among them the Edward Steves Homestead and the Carl Wilhelm August Groos House. The city made King William its first historic district in 1968, after Walter Mathis began restoring the neighborhood's decaying homes, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 20, 1972. King William Park, with a bandstand first built in 1892 on the old arsenal grounds, and a stretch of the River Walk run through the district.
