King-Lincoln Bronzeville Historic District

$8.00

King-Lincoln Bronzeville is a historically African American neighborhood on the Near East Side of Columbus, Ohio, just east of Interstate 71 and north of East Broad Street. Known to residents as Bronzeville, it had become a self-sustaining Black community by the 1930s, with its own businesses, hospitals, schools and churches and an entertainment scene of four theaters and several jazz clubs. The 1928 Egyptian Revival Lincoln Theatre, the King Arts Complex in the former Pythian Theatre, and Second Baptist Church, founded in 1824 as the first Black Baptist church in Columbus, anchor the district today. Construction of I-71 in the 1960s cut through the neighborhood and began a long decline, and the city's King-Lincoln District Plan, begun in 2001, led its revitalization. The Long Street Bridge over I-71 carries a 240-foot cultural wall of 60 panels depicting the district's history.
