Iron-on patch

Karamu House

$8.00

Karamu House, on East 89th Street in Cleveland's Fairfax neighborhood, is the oldest producing Black theatre in the United States. Oberlin graduates Russell and Rowena Jelliffe founded it in 1915 as a settlement house open to people of every race, plays began there in 1917, and in 1941 it took the name Karamu, Swahili for "a place of joyful gathering." Langston Hughes, who spent part of his youth in Cleveland, premiered several plays here in the 1930s, and the theatre's alumni include actors Bill Cobbs, Robert Guillaume and Minnie Gentry. A $14.5 million renovation that began in 2017, led by Robert P. Madison International, rebuilt the 195-seat Jelliffe Theatre and the Arena Theatre and added a gallery, bistro, patio and outdoor stage. The building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982.
