The Joslyn Art Museum is Omaha's principal art museum, founded by Sarah Joslyn as a memorial to her husband George and opened on November 29, 1931 in an Art Deco building. It closed for construction in May 2022 and reopened in September 2024 with the Rhonda and Howard Hawks Pavilion, a 42,000-square-foot addition designed by Snøhetta with Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture whose cloud-like exterior nods to the Great Plains. The collection ranges from ancient to contemporary art and is especially known for art of the American West. The museum was meant to be free when it opened in 1931 and returned to free admission in 2013, which it kept after the 2024 reopening.
