Jones Beach State Park, on Long Island's south shore near Wantagh, New York, opened in 1929 under the direction of Robert Moses, whose parkway and parks projects reshaped the New York metropolitan region for decades afterward. Its landmark 231-foot water tower was designed to resemble the bell tower of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. The park stretches for several miles of Atlantic beach and includes the Jones Beach Theater, a longtime outdoor concert venue. It remains one of the most heavily visited beaches in the country and a model for large-scale public park design of its era.
