It is designated a National Natural Landmark and remains one of the most visited state parks in North Carolina. The open dunes make it a popular spot for hang gliding, a tradition connected to the Outer Banks' history as the site of the Wright brothers' early flight experiments a few miles north. Unlike most dune systems, Jockey's Ridge continues to shift and reshape with the wind rather than being anchored by vegetation.
