Japanese Tea Garden

The Japanese Tea Garden, also called the Sunken Gardens, fills a former limestone quarry on the northwestern edge of Brackenridge Park, near the San Antonio Zoo. German masons began quarrying stone here around 1840, and from 1880 the Alamo Cement Company made cement on the site for 26 years; its kiln chimney still stands. Around 1917 city parks commissioner Ray Lambert proposed a garden in the pit, and in 1918 he used prison labor to build walkways, stone arch bridges, an island and a Japanese pagoda, with an entrance gate by the artist Dionicio Rodriguez. The Japanese-American artist Kimi Eizo Jingu came to live in the garden in 1919 and his family served tea there until they were evicted in 1942, when the city renamed it the Chinese Tea Garden amid wartime anti-Japanese feeling. The Japanese Tea Garden name was restored in 1984, and a restoration of the ponds and waterfall reopened the garden on March 8, 2008.
