Jacob L. Loose Park

$8.00

Jacob L. Loose Park is Kansas City's third-largest park, at 51st Street and Wornall Road south of the Country Club Plaza. The land was pasture belonging to pioneer Seth Ward, and during the Civil War's Battle of Westport in 1864 Confederate General Sterling Price is said to have commanded his forces from gun emplacements on what became the park's south end, where Civil War markers stand today. From 1897 it held the Kansas City Country Club's first golf course, and Ella Loose bought the property in 1926 and gave it to the city in 1927 in honor of her husband, the founder of the Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company. The park is known for its Rose Garden, which hosts weddings and outdoor theatrical performances, along with a lake and the Japanese Tea Room and Garden, dedicated in 2006 as an exchange with sister city Kurashiki, Japan.
