Iron-on patch

International Peace Gardens

$8.00

The International Peace Gardens is an 11-acre botanical garden inside Jordan Park on the west side of Salt Lake City, along the banks of the Jordan River. The project began in 1939 to give the city's foreign-born communities a part in beautifying Salt Lake City for its 1947 centennial; World War II halted it before planting, work resumed in 1947, and the garden was dedicated in 1952. Each participating Utah-based national group designs, builds and plants its own section at its own expense, then presents it to the city, which maintains it. The United States section came first and is the largest, followed by the Japanese garden, and the gardens now represent 28 nations. Sculptures include a bust of Mahatma Gandhi, a replica of The Little Mermaid, an Olmec head replica and a Bauta stone.
