The Indianapolis City Market is a historic public market on Market Street in downtown Indianapolis, on a site that has held a market since the city was founded in 1821. The current market house, a one-story brick hall trimmed in limestone with a front-gabled center section between square towers, opened in 1886 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Beneath the plaza on its west side lie the Indianapolis Catacombs, the brick archways and limestone columns of Tomlinson Hall, a 4,200-seat public hall that burned in 1958. Long a farmers market and later a food hall, the market closed to the public on March 1, 2024, for a redevelopment that adds housing to the block and a terraced plaza exposing the catacombs and the Tomlinson Hall archway. No reopening date has been announced, but the 1886 hall and its plaza can still be seen from Market Street.
