Icelandic State Park

Icelandic State Park, near Cavalier, North Dakota, is named for the wave of Icelandic immigrants who settled in the surrounding Pembina County area in the late 19th century, one of the largest concentrations of Icelandic heritage in the United States. Within the park, the Gunlogson Nature Preserve protects an old-growth forest along the Tongue River, one of the few such stands remaining in the state. The park's Pioneer Heritage Center includes a collection of historic log cabins and buildings relocated from the surrounding region. Its blend of natural forest and settlement history reflects the area's distinct immigrant identity.
