Hunting Island State Park

Hunting Island State Park, near Beaufort, South Carolina, is home to a lighthouse built in 1875 and relocated inland in 1889 after coastal erosion threatened its original site. The park's beach is among the most rapidly changing in the state, shifting significantly from erosion and storms over the decades since it has no seawalls or shoreline armoring. Its maritime forest, marked by sun-bleached driftwood and salt-killed trees, gives parts of the island a striking, otherworldly look. The lighthouse remains open for visitors to climb for views over the Atlantic.
