The Hunter Museum of American Art stands on an 80-foot bluff above the Tennessee River in Chattanooga's Bluff View Art District, looking out over the Walnut Street Bridge and downtown. Its building joins three eras: the 1904 classical revival Faxon mansion designed by Abram Garfield, son of President James A. Garfield, which has housed the museum since it opened in 1952; a brutalist addition of 1975; and a 2005 wing by Randall Stout that is now the entrance. The collection surveys American art from the Hudson River School and 19th-century genre painting through American Impressionism, the Ashcan School, early modernism and regionalism to post-war modern and contemporary work. The museum is named for George Hunter, heir to Chattanooga's Coca-Cola bottling business, whose Benwood Foundation made it the centerpiece of its gifts to the city.
