Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site is an 860-acre state park in unincorporated El Paso County, about 32 miles (roughly 45 minutes) northeast of downtown El Paso via US 62/180. Its three low syenite mountains are pitted with natural rock basins, or huecos, that have trapped rainwater for travelers in this arid basin for thousands of years, and the people who stopped here left thousands of pictographs, including the largest concentration of Native American mask paintings in North America. The site served as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail in 1858–59 and became a state park in 1969–70. Today it is world-famous for bouldering, and the Hueco bouldering grades are named after it. The park often reaches capacity, so Texas Parks and Wildlife strongly recommends reserving day-use entry ahead; self-guided access to North Mountain is limited to 70 permits a day, and campers and self-guided visitors must first watch an orientation video.
