Iron-on patch

Houston Heights

$8.00

Houston Heights, usually just called the Heights, is a neighborhood about 4 miles northwest of downtown Houston that began as one of the earliest planned communities in Texas. In 1891 Oscar Martin Carter's Omaha and South Texas Land Company bought 1,756 acres and laid out a streetcar suburb with its own streets, parks, schools and utilities, on ground 23 feet higher than the city. The Heights was a separate municipality from 1896 until it agreed to be annexed by Houston in 1919. Heights Boulevard, with its broad tree-lined esplanade, runs through the middle of the neighborhood past houses dating from the early 1900s, and about 100 Heights properties have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since the 1990s boutiques, restaurants and bars have opened across the area, including along West 19th Street, while three city historic districts protect its older blocks.
