Hoover Dam

$8.00

Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, straddling the Nevada–Arizona line near Boulder City, about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas. It was built between 1931 and 1936, during the Great Depression, and dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 30, 1935. The official toll was 96 deaths during construction at the site; 112 deaths are associated with the project when earlier survey-era and other deaths are counted, and 42 workers whose deaths were recorded as pneumonia are not included in either figure. Congress called it Hoover Dam, the Roosevelt administration renamed it Boulder Dam, and Congress restored the name Hoover Dam in 1947. The dam impounds Lake Mead and is a day trip from Las Vegas by car or on an organized tour.
