Iron-on patch

Historic Winter Quarters

$8.00

Historic Winter Quarters, in the Florence neighborhood of North Omaha, marks the 1846–48 encampment where about 2,500 Latter-day Saints driven from Nauvoo, Illinois, waited out the winter before trekking west. They built more than 800 cabins and sod houses on the bluffs above the Missouri River, and church records list 359 deaths from disease between September 1846 and May 1848. Many of the dead lie in the Mormon Pioneer Cemetery at 3301 State Street, an Omaha landmark whose 1936 bronze by Avard Fairbanks shows parents who have just buried an infant, and whose Roll of Honor lists the names of those buried there. Directly across State Street, the Mormon Trail Center at Winter Quarters, dedicated in 1997, tells the story of the encampment and the Mormon Trail, and the Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple stands beside the cemetery.
