Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (Ballard Locks)

$8.00
The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, better known as the Ballard Locks, are a pair of navigation locks at the west end of Salmon Bay on the Lake Washington Ship Canal, between Seattle's Ballard neighborhood to the north and Magnolia to the south. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and formally opened on July 4, 1917, they can lift a vessel up to 26 feet between the salt water of Puget Sound and the fresh water of Lake Union and Lake Washington, and they carry more boat traffic than any other lock in the United States. Their construction lowered Lake Washington by 8.8 feet and reshaped the city's shoreline. A fish ladder rebuilt in 1976 has 21 steps and an underground viewing room where visitors can watch Chinook, Coho and Sockeye salmon swim upstream, especially from July to mid-August. The grounds also hold a visitor center and the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens, and together they draw more than a million visitors a year.
