Heritage Square is the historic block on Monroe Street between 6th and 7th Streets in downtown Phoenix, the last remaining residential block of the original Phoenix townsite. Its centerpiece is the Rosson House, a Stick-Eastlake Queen Anne Victorian designed by San Francisco architect A. P. Petit and completed in 1895 for Dr. Roland Lee Rosson, who was elected mayor of Phoenix that May. Around it stand restored homes from 1899 to 1923, among them the Bouvier-Teeter House, the Silva House and the Stevens-Haustgen House, along with the 1929 Baird Machine Shop, now Pizzeria Bianco, and the Lath House pavilion. The Gammel family, who owned the Rosson House from 1914 to 1948, ran it as a rooming house, and after later owners it fell into disrepair until, in 1974, the City of Phoenix bought it and the rest of the block at the urging of Mayor John D. Driggs. Restoration began in 1976, the square opened as a park in 1980, and the Heritage Square Foundation runs the Rosson House as a historic house museum with public tours.
