Iron-on patch

Heinz History Center

$8.00

The Senator John Heinz History Center is the largest history museum in Pennsylvania and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, at 1212 Smallman Street in Pittsburgh's Strip District. It is the home of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, which began in 1879 as a club called the Old Residents of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania and is the region's oldest cultural organization. The museum opened in 1996 in the renovated, century-old Chautauqua Lake Ice Company warehouse, adapted by the architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. Six floors of exhibitions tell Western Pennsylvania's story, from the French and Indian War and the region's glass industry to African American history, the H.J. Heinz Company and set pieces from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. A Smithsonian wing added in 2004 holds the sports museum now named for Franco Harris, and in 2024 USA Today readers named it the best history museum in the United States.
