The Hays Street Bridge is a 353-foot wrought-iron truss bridge that carries Hays Street over the Union Pacific tracks, North Cherry Street and Chestnut Street east of downtown San Antonio, linking downtown with the Dignowity Hill neighborhood on the East Side. Its main span, a 225-foot Murphy-Whipple truss made by the Phoenix Bridge Company of Pennsylvania, was built in 1881 to carry the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway over the Nueces River west of Uvalde, and it was moved here with a 128-foot Pratt truss in 1910. It served as a main road between the East Side and downtown until 1982, when it was closed and the city considered tearing it down. Local preservationists saved it, and after a rehabilitation funded through TxDOT's Statewide Transportation Enhancement Program it reopened as a pedestrian bridge in 2010. It is one of four Whipple trusses left in Texas and the only Texas bridge known to use hollow wrought-iron Phoenix columns, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
