Iron-on patch

Hampton Park

$8.00

Hampton Park is a 60-acre public park on the upper Charleston peninsula and the largest park on the peninsula, bordered by The Citadel to the west and the Hampton Park Terrace, North Central and Wagener Terrace neighborhoods. From 1835 the land held the Washington Race Course, and Mary Murray Drive, the one-mile road that circles the park, follows almost exactly the line of the old track. At the end of the Civil War the race course was used as a prison camp, and on May 1, 1865, thousands of freed Black Charlestonians held a ceremony there for the Union dead that has been cited as one of the first Memorial Day observances. After the 1901–1902 South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition the city turned part of the grounds into a park, with a plan by John Charles Olmsted; it is named for Confederate general and governor Wade Hampton III.
