Gunpowder Falls State Park is one of Maryland's largest state parks, spanning roughly 18,000 acres across several separate sections strung along the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls, rivers whose old-fashioned name refers to fast-moving water rather than a literal waterfall. Its Hereford area is a popular destination for catch-and-release trout fishing on cold water released from Prettyboy Reservoir. The park's Jerusalem Mill area preserves an 18th-century grist mill and blacksmith shop as part of a small historic village. Trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding connect the park's various sections across Baltimore and Harford counties.
