The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is a science museum in Jackson Park, in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, next to Lake Michigan and the University of Chicago. It occupies the Palace of Fine Arts, which Charles B. Atwood designed for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition; it is one of only two major Exposition buildings still standing, the Art Institute's building being the other. Sears, Roebuck and Company president Julius Rosenwald endowed the museum, and it opened in 1933 during the Century of Progress Exposition, after the building's plaster exterior was recast in limestone. Its best-known exhibits include the captured World War II German submarine U-505, the Pioneer Zephyr streamlined train, the Apollo 8 command module and a full-size replica coal mine. It took its current name in May 2024 after a $125 million gift from financier Kenneth C. Griffin.
