Iron-on patch

Greenwood District

$8.00

Greenwood is the historic African American district just north of downtown Tulsa that grew so prosperous in the early 1900s it was known as 'Black Wall Street', with Greenwood Avenue lined by Black-owned hotels, shops, offices and churches. On May 31 and June 1, 1921, a white mob burned it to the ground in the Tulsa race massacre, killing between 75 and 300 people and leaving about 5,000 homeless, yet survivors rebuilt much of the district within ten years despite city efforts to stop them. Greenwood Rising, the Black Wall Street history center that opened in 2021 at Greenwood Avenue and Archer Street, tells that story in four galleries. A few blocks away, John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park remembers the massacre with sculptures and bronze plaques, and Vernon AME Church, founded by district pioneer O. W. Gurley, still stands on Greenwood Avenue. The Greenwood Cultural Center, opened in 1995, completes a walk through the district.
