Grayson Highlands State Park, near Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, sits at some of the highest elevations in the state, adjacent to the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, home to Virginia's two tallest peaks, Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain. The park is best known for its herd of feral ponies, introduced in the 1970s to graze the open highland balds and keep them from reverting to forest. A section of the Appalachian Trail passes through the park's high country. Its alpine-like meadows and rock outcrops are unusual for the southern Appalachians.
