Grand Isle State Park sits at the eastern end of Grand Isle, Louisiana's only inhabited coastal barrier island reachable by car, connected to the mainland via Louisiana Highway 1. The island has a long history as a fishing and vacation community, and it hosts one of the country's oldest fishing tournaments, the Tarpon Rodeo, held nearby most years since 1928. The park includes an observation tower and beach access to the Gulf of Mexico. Grand Isle has repeatedly been damaged by hurricanes, including Katrina and Ida, requiring ongoing beach and infrastructure rebuilding.
