Iron-on patch

Governor's Mansion State Historic Park

$8.00

The Governor's Mansion at 16th and H streets is a thirty-room Second Empire-Italianate Victorian house built in 1877 for hardware merchant Albert Gallatin and later owned by Joseph Steffens, father of journalist Lincoln Steffens. The state bought it in 1903, and thirteen governors, from George Pardee to Ronald Reagan, lived here until 1967. Reagan stayed only a few months before moving to a leased house in East Sacramento, and the mansion passed to California State Parks, opening as a historic house museum in 1970. Many furnishings remain, including Pardee's 1902 Steinway piano, Hiram Johnson's velvet chairs and Persian rugs bought by Earl Warren's wife. After a renovation, Jerry Brown moved back in from 2015, and Gavin Newsom lived here briefly in 2019.
