Governors Island National Monument

$8.00

Governors Island National Monument is a National Park Service unit covering 22 acres of Governors Island, a 172-acre island off the southern tip of Manhattan in New York Harbor. The monument preserves Fort Jay and Castle Williams, fortifications built between 1806 and 1811 to defend New York City from attack by sea, which played roles in the War of 1812, the Civil War and both World Wars. The island was a U.S. Army post from 1794 to 1966 and Coast Guard headquarters from 1966 to 1996, and the monument was established by presidential proclamation in 2001. The monument covers the two forts and their grounds, not the island's parks and promenade, which are run by the Trust for Governors Island.
