Iron-on patch

Gloria Dei Church National Historic Site

$8.00

Gloria Dei Church, known locally as Old Swedes', is a historic church at 929 South Water Street in the Southwark neighborhood of Philadelphia, near the Delaware River. Built between 1698 and 1700, it is the oldest church in Pennsylvania and the second-oldest Swedish church in the United States. Its congregation was founded in 1646 on Tinicum Island by settlers of the New Sweden colony and moved to this site at Wicaco in 1677, five years before the founding of Philadelphia. In 1703 it hosted the first regular Lutheran ordination in the Americas, and the church has been Episcopalian since 1845. The church and its burial ground were designated a National Historic Site in 1942.
