Iron-on patch

Gilgal Sculpture Garden

$8.00

Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a small public park at 749 East 500 South, tucked mid-block in central Salt Lake City. Masonry contractor and LDS bishop Thomas Battersby Child Jr. began building it in his backyard in 1945, at age 57, and kept working on it until his death in 1963. It holds 12 original sculptures and more than 70 stones engraved with scriptures, poems and literary texts, many on Latter-day Saint themes, most famously a sphinx with the face of Joseph Smith. A citizens' group, the Friends of Gilgal Garden, saved it from redevelopment, and it reopened as a city park in October 2000. It is the only designated visionary art environment in Utah.
