The George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center on Angelina Street in East Austin is a free City of Austin museum of African American history, art and culture. It grew out of the city's former Carver branch library, a small wood-frame building put up in 1926 at Ninth and Guadalupe streets and moved east to Angelina Street in 1933 to serve Austin's Black community, which knew it for years as the 'Colored Branch.' Renamed for George Washington Carver in 1947, it served as a library until a new branch opened next door in 1979, and the museum opened in the old building on October 24, 1980, adding a larger facility in 2001. Its core exhibit, The African American Presence in 19th Century Texas, closes with Juneteenth, and its Freedom Plaza holds the Juneteenth Memorial Sculpture Monument, unveiled in 2015. The center also has two rotating art galleries, a genealogy center and the Boyd Vance Theatre.
