The George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center occupies the 1926 building of Carver High School at 415 E. Grant Street, just south of downtown Phoenix. Opened as Phoenix Union Colored High School and dedicated on September 10, 1926, it was the only school building in Arizona built exclusively for African American high school students, and it was renamed for George Washington Carver in 1943. The school closed in 1954, after a Maricopa County Superior Court judge ruled in 1953 that segregating Phoenix's high schools was unconstitutional, more than a year before Brown v. Board of Education. The campus was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, and in 1996 the Phoenix Monarchs Alumni Association, a group of Carver graduates, bought it to house the museum and cultural center. The main building, the shop building and the old grandstand still stand, preserving the history of Phoenix's Black community and its segregated school.
