Garfield Park Conservatory is one of the largest greenhouse conservatories in the United States, set inside Garfield Park on Chicago's West Side. Landscape architect Jens Jensen designed it with the Prairie School firm Schmidt, Garden and Martin and the engineering firm Hitchings and Company, and it was built in 1906–1907 to replace three smaller West Side conservatories. Jensen conceived it as a series of naturalistic landscapes under glass, and the building's low, rounded shape was meant to recall Midwestern haystacks. Rooms such as the Palm Room and the Fern Room hold plants from around the world, including cycads more than 200 years old. The conservatory was restored beginning in 1994 and repaired again after a hailstorm shattered much of its glass in June 2011.
