Fulton Street is downtown Fresno's historic main street, originally J Street and renamed in 1910 for local financier Fulton G. Berry. In 1964 a six-block stretch was closed to cars and dedicated as the Fulton Mall, a pedestrian mall planned under Victor Gruen with landscape design by Garrett Eckbo. The mall declined as shopping moved north to Fashion Fair and other centers, and after years of debate a $20 million project reopened the street to traffic in October 2017. Much of the mall's modernist public art, including works by Clement Renzi, George Tsutakawa, Peter Voulkos and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, was moved to the sidewalks. The corridor is still lined with early landmarks such as the 1914 Helm Building, called Fresno's first skyscraper.
