The Freedom Tower is a 1925 Mediterranean Revival tower at 600 Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami, designed by Schultze and Weaver with a cupola modeled on the Giralda in Seville. It was built as the headquarters and printing plant of The Miami News. From 1962 to 1974 the federal government ran the Cuban Refugee Center here, processing and caring for refugees from the Cuban Revolution, which earned it the name 'Cuban Ellis Island'. Today Miami Dade College owns it as part of its Wolfson Campus and runs it as the MDC Museum of Art and Design (MOAD), with rotating exhibitions and cultural programs; public hours are limited. It became a National Historic Landmark in 2008 and reopened in September 2025 after a $25 million restoration.
