Freedmen's Town Historic District

Freedmen's Town is the historic core of Houston's Fourth Ward, just west of downtown, where formerly enslaved people from the Brazos River cotton plantations began settling along the south bank of Buffalo Bayou in 1866. The roughly 1,000 settlers built their own churches, schools, businesses and utilities on cheap, flood-prone land, and paved streets with bricks they made themselves, some of which still line the neighborhood. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was the center of Houston's African American community, led by ministers such as Jack Yates. The Freedmen's Town Historic District, 64 acres with 530 historic buildings, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 17, 1985, but most of those buildings were torn down in the redevelopment that followed. Survivors include the Rutherford B. H. Yates Sr. House museum, shotgun houses with deep front porches, and the African American Library at the Gregory School.
