Iron-on patch

Francis Land House

$8.00

The Francis Land House, also known as Rose Hall, is a brick plantation house on Virginia Beach Boulevard built between about 1805 and 1810 by Francis Land VI, whose family had held land here since the 1630s. Enslaved people were documented on the plantation from 1694, and the museum's tours cover their lives alongside the Land family's. In the 20th century the house became the Rose Hall Dress Shop, and when a developer planned to tear it down for a shopping mall in the 1970s, the City of Virginia Beach bought it with 7 acres of land in 1975. It opened as a historic house museum in 1986, with Flemish-bond brick walls outside, Federal-style rooms inside, and gardens and a short nature trail on the grounds. Admission and guided tours are free, Thursday through Sunday.
