Fourth Avenue Historic District

The Fourth Avenue Historic District is the surviving core of Birmingham's Black business district from the segregation era, covering the 1600 to 1800 blocks of 4th Avenue North and parts of 17th and 18th Streets downtown. Shut out of white-owned restaurants, theaters and shops under Jim Crow, Black Birmingham built its own commercial center here, with businesses, lodges, and doctors' and lawyers' offices. Its landmarks include the Alabama Penny Savings Bank (the Pythian Temple), the seven-story Colored Masonic Temple of 1922, and the 1935 Carver Theatre, now a performing arts center and home of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and sits a block from Kelly Ingram Park inside the Birmingham Civil Rights District.
