Fountain Square Cultural District

$8.00

Fountain Square is a neighborhood and one of Indianapolis's designated cultural districts, about 1.5 miles southeast of downtown, centered on the junction of Virginia Avenue, Prospect Street and Shelby Street. It is named for the succession of fountains at that intersection, the first of them built in 1889, and Virginia Avenue grew into the southside's commercial street from the 1860s, built largely by German-American merchants. From the 1920s to the 1950s it was the city's main entertainment district, with as many as seven theaters, among them the 1928 Fountain Square Theatre. Interstate construction from 1968 to 1971 cut the neighborhood off from downtown and displaced about 6,000 residents, but preservation work from the 1980s and the cultural-district designation in 1999 brought back galleries, restaurants and live music venues. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail ends here, linking Fountain Square to downtown along Virginia Avenue.
