Iron-on patch

Foster Botanical Garden

$8.00

Foster Botanical Garden is the oldest botanical garden in Hawaii, about 14 acres of mature tropical plantings on North Vineyard Boulevard at the edge of Chinatown. German physician and botanist William Hillebrand leased the land from Queen Kalama in 1853 and planted many of the giant trees that still stand on the Upper Terrace. Thomas and Mary Foster bought the property in 1884, and Mary Foster left it to the City and County of Honolulu when she died in 1930. The garden now holds palms, heliconias and gingers, an Economic Garden of herbs, spices and dyes, the Prehistoric Glen of primitive plants, the Lyon Orchid Garden, and a sacred fig descended from the Bodhi tree. It is the first of the five Honolulu Botanical Gardens and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
