Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge

$8.00

The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge covers 3,621 acres of prairie, forest and wetland on the West Fork of the Trinity River between Lakeside and Lake Worth, inside the Fort Worth city limits. It is one of the largest city-owned nature centers in the United States and has more than 20 miles of hiking trails, plus a paddling trail that loops through Greer Island Bay. The land was first protected to guard Lake Worth's watershed, and a Civilian Conservation Corps camp built rock steps and shelters that hikers still pass on the Caprock and Canyon Ridge trails. The city's Park Board set it aside as a wildlife sanctuary in 1964, and the refuge has kept a herd of American bison since 1973. The Hardwicke Interpretive Center has exhibits on local weather, plants, animals and fossils.
