Fort Stevens State Park

Fort Stevens State Park sits at the mouth of the Columbia River near Hammond, Oregon, on the site of a coastal defense fort first built during the Civil War and expanded through both World Wars. On June 21, 1942, a Japanese submarine shelled the fort, making it one of the only sites on the U.S. mainland attacked by enemy fire during World War II. The park's beach holds the rusted remains of the Peter Iredale, a four-masted sailing ship that wrecked there in 1906 and remains partly visible in the sand. Visitors can also explore the fort's old gun batteries and bunkers.
