Fort Robinson State Park, near Crawford, Nebraska, occupies the site of a U.S. Army fort established in 1874 in the Pine Ridge region, originally to oversee the nearby Red Cloud Agency. It is best known as the site where Oglala Lakota leader Crazy Horse was killed in September 1877 while in military custody. In later decades the fort served as a cavalry remount station, a military working-dog training center, and a World War II prisoner-of-war camp. Today it is one of Nebraska's largest state parks, with a lodge, trail rides, and buildings preserved from its long military history.
