Iron-on patch

Fort Negley Park

$8.00

Fort Negley Park surrounds the ruins of Fort Negley, the star-shaped limestone fort Union troops built on St. Cloud Hill after they captured Nashville in 1862. It was the largest inland fort built in the United States during the Civil War. Black laborers did most of the work: enslaved people (women among them), newly freed people who came to Union-held Nashville, and free Black men conscripted for the job, 2,768 of them officially enrolled. The fort played no leading part in the December 1864 Battle of Nashville and fell into ruin after the war until the WPA restored it in the 1930s. Closed to the public for decades, the stabilized ruins reopened in 2004, and a visitors center followed in 2007. UNESCO lists the site as a Site of Memory in its Slave Route Project.
