Fort Macon State Park, at the eastern tip of Bogue Banks near Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, centers on a masonry coastal fort built between 1826 and 1834 to guard Beaufort Inlet. North Carolina state troops seized the fort in 1861 before the state's formal secession, and Union forces recaptured it in April 1862 after a bombardment during the Civil War. The well-preserved fort is one of the most visited historic sites in the state park system, with rooms open to explore and regular interpretive programs. The surrounding park also includes beach and dune areas along the inlet.
