Fort Fisher State Recreation Area covers a stretch of beach at Kure Beach, North Carolina, next to the separately managed Fort Fisher State Historic Site, once the largest earthwork fortification in the Confederacy, built to protect Wilmington's vital blockade-running port during the Civil War. The fort fell to Union forces in January 1865 after one of the war's largest combined land and naval assaults. Today the recreation area's beach is an important nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles. Swimming, fishing, and beachcombing are the park's main draws.
