Iron-on patch

Fort Douglas

$8.00

Fort Douglas is a former U.S. Army post on the east bench of Salt Lake City, established as Camp Douglas in October 1862, during the Civil War, to protect the overland mail route and telegraph lines. Colonel Patrick Connor chose the site for his volunteer troops from California and Nevada, and the camp later became a regimental post renamed Fort Douglas. It held German prisoners of war and interned civilians during World War I, served as a base through World War II, and officially closed in 1991, with most of its land passing to the University of Utah. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975, and the Fort Douglas Military Museum occupies two former barracks buildings. The post cemetery, about a mile south of the parade ground, holds an 1864 monument to soldiers killed in the Bear River Massacre.
