Fort Caroline National Memorial

$8.00

Fort Caroline National Memorial commemorates Fort Caroline, the French Huguenot colony founded on the St. Johns River on June 22, 1564, under René Goulaine de Laudonnière. Spanish troops under Pedro Menéndez de Avilés sacked the fort in September 1565. The exact site of the original fort is unknown; the memorial, established in 1953 on the river's southern bank near St. Johns Bluff, is generally accepted as being in its vicinity but probably not the exact location. The fort on display is a near full-scale representative model, not a reconstruction on the original site, and in 2025 the park announced it would be demolished because of flooding and rebuilt on higher ground. The memorial is part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve.
